Today was the end of our first DNOW with the students at McCarthy Baptist Church. #WinningSM has really taken off in the first six months that we have been here and I am really excited to see what God has in store!
The whole weekend was called 2: Don't Bow! It focused on getting rid of all of our idols (things, activities, or people we put before God) and really getting to know God face to face for the first time or maybe the first time in a long time. It was neat to watch the students as they began to realize all the things that they have been putting before God in their lives and then to start re-prioritizing things.
Not only was this DNOW awesome because of what God was doing and because it was the first one here, but it was also awesome because I had the privilege of working with so many of my former youth and grand-youth (youth who had one of my students as their youth minister)! Two of my girls, Gretel and Shaina, did a drama on Saturday night that was all about finding God and when you find Him--or more appropriately He finds you--holding on and never letting go. It was so amazing that I just have to share it with you below!
If you are in youth ministry, I pray you will see the blessing of God in yout ministry as I have witnessed in mine this weekend. If you aren't then I pray that you will still be able to see the power of God as He works in your life and that you will appreciate the hard work of the student workers in your church. Where's the Beef?
This past weekend was DNOW. I don't know if you have ever been apart of a Disciple Now weekend or not but you should try it sometimes. In fact, one of the senior adult women in our church that my wife and I affectionately call Grandma Edna said that she thought we should have an adult DNOW weekend. The thought made me smile, but I wonder if an adult DNOW would go over as well as the one we do for the youth.
I mean there are some key ingredients to a DNOW weekend that I just don't see adults getting into. #1 You go away from home and sleep on the floor of someone else's house (along with 10-20 other people) for a whole weekend. #2 You spend the weekend alternating between crazy fun activities and doing Bible study and worship. #3 You have to get uncomfortable so that God can speak to you.
This year, the whole theme of DNOW was Where's the Beef? It was based on the passage in the book of Hebrews where the writer explains that by now the Hebrew Christians should be digging deep into the meat of the Gospel rather than relying on the feel good, easy to swallow Spiritual milk that they received as baby Christians. When you sit down to a meal of spiritual meat, you have to be willing for God to dig in there and remove your deepest and darkest sins and possibly even change your life.
Teenagers resist this at first because they like having things their own way and they don't want to take a chance that God will ask them to change the way that they live their lives, but eventually most of them will yield to God. They see the potential that God has for their lives. They want His best for Him. They are willing to change. That's where I think most adults fall short. Just like teens we are stuck in our ways. We are comfortable. We don't want God to change us. But what really holds us back is that too often we hold onto our stubbornness and pride and we refuse to yield to God. So we miss out.
Where's the Beef? It's right there in the Word of God waiting for you to dig in and enjoy it. The real question is, can you handle the beef? Can you handle what it takes to get to the beef?
Will you let God change your life?

DNOW 2011 at Villebrook Baptist Church
This will be my fourth DNOW at Villebrook Baptist Church in Hazelwood, Missouri. Each year the theme has been different but the goal has been the same--bring students closer to God. Just to take a moment and fondly look back I will remind you of all three past VBC DNOW themes:

I will write more about DNOW 2011 after it is over. I wouldn't want to give anything away. It's going to be a great time. We are going to have a lot of fun, and most importantly you will be challenged to draw closer to God!
DNOW 2011: Where's the Beef?
Starts Friday, March 18th at 7:00pm
Ends Sunday, March 20th at Noon
Cost: $20 per student plus a bag of chips and a bottle of soda to share
Just a reminder, if you come for DNOW you need to stay the whole weekend. We will not be allowing drop by visits or come and go participation (unless pre-approved by me--Jimmy Mustion).
